AP English Harry Potter Houses

Hey y'all!

Following up Rikki's post last week about what Harry Potter houses the Sing, Unburied, Sing characters would be in, we thought it would be fun to sort us. So, since I'm new this year, I don't think I know enough to sort y'all myself; however, before you guys sort each other, let me give you a brief description of each house in case you haven't read the book.

Gryffindors are set apart by their braveness, chivalry, and daringness. They are known for being leaders, having courage, and defending those in need. I'll defer to Ryn on how to better describe this house.

Slytherins, in short, are cunning and ambitious. Many of them will use any means necessary to achieve what they want. However, please do not think that Slyterin is evil in any way. While some villains in the novels are in this house, there are many good qualities about belonging to Slytherin.

Ravenclaws value information more than anything else. Belonging to this house means so much more than just you're smart. Rather, being a Ravenclaw describes you as someone who prefers learning over partying, diplomacy over violence, math over P.E., etc. To be cliche, the house has an overall sense of "the pen is mightier than the sword." However, please note that belonging to other houses also doesn't imply that you're less intelligent by any sense. One of the smartest girls in Harry's year, Hermione, is a Gryffindor. Also, this is my house, if y'all can't tell.

Hufflepuffs are characterized by their loyalty. They see the value of friendship and can find the good in almost anyone. Often, they are quiet and funny, but they are also competitive, as seen in the fourth book, but not near as competitive as Slytherins.

Anyways, if you disagree with any of these descriptions, please comment. I'm a huge fan of the series, and I always enjoy debating the sorting concept to real world groups. So, I've attached a link to a form to vote on how belongs in what house, and I encourage everyone to vote. Next week, I'll share the results in another post, and we can discuss it. Hope everyone's had a great weekend!

Yours truly,
Hunter

Firstly I would like to thank Hunter Richardson for giving me a shout out. If y’all didn’t know already I am a Gryffindor and very proud, as I’ve been a Harry Potter fan for years. Explaining my house is a bit hard because I believe that Gryffindor isn’t just based off of how brave you are but how closely connected you are to your morals. That makes it really hard to really distinguish a Gryffindor my opinion because you really need to understand what a persons morals are and how closely connected they are to them while also understanding of these morals are the noble morals that are expected of a Gryffindor or more of the ambitious and at times conceited morals of a Slytherin. Gryffindor and slither in often play hand in hand so it’s a very close call when you determine either of those houses. For example I can say when I test for my Potter housing quizzes are usually get Griffin door but they will always be a few quizzes were I’ll get the oddball Slytherin. That being said griffin doors are not precisely just these brave confident individual to run headfirst into danger some griffin doors aren’t even brave Ron Weasley and never let Longbottom we’re both very scary people but they always turn to their morals and were shown to be loyal and willing to do whatever it takes to help others because they knew it was the right thing. Griffin doors aren’t always these people that do the right thing also though as Ron Weasley often tried to convince his friends to cheat or lie, So I feel like I have to point out that also griffin doors are not these perfect “main character people.” Gryffindor I believe is often sort of based off of your future in your potential rather than your character, I can honestly say this isn’t true of all houses but Griffin door is definitely one of these rare few. Gryffindor truly helps the characters in my opinion develop overtime to become who they are by the end of the novel, Harry Potter and Neville Longbottom both developed qualities of loyalty, friendship, and bravery that helps them later on and to truly achieve their goals and make them the better people they could be. I believe the theory went to slither in for example this ending that we have we are Voldemort was defeated may not have happened because Harry would not have learned to value nobility in chivalry. That being said I am a strong believer that the sorting house does not sort you based off of your character but your future and who you want to be.Personally I am a very scary person but I do have strong morals and I’ve always desired to be more brave and confident. I feel like that was really taken into account when I was sorted.Could’ve easily been a Slytherin though because I have a very strong Ambotipn and can be competitive to the point where I sometimes feel the urge to use foul play but I don’t value these qualities of myself and I feel that Griffin door is my house because it does not fit into my shortcomings. I’d love to hear what y’all think about this and what your own houses are in while y’all were sorting into those houses.

Please excuse the typos I know they’re bad

Pt. 1
Hunter and I actually had a conversation about his blog post before he did it. Even though I don't know much, I spoke to both Deryn (the residential HP expert) and Hunter about sorting everyone in the class. So, without further ado...I shall begin.

I wanted to start with Gryffindor since this is the easiest for me.

Deryn is our Gryffindor, and she already explained why. I agree with her completely. You genuinely make me a better person and I am proud to say you are the only Gryffindork I will ever claim as a close friend. But seriously, you make me a braver and better person and I will never be able to understand how or why.

She isn't the only Gryffindor in our AP English class however. I think Ms. Megan King is also a Gryffindor. I might be wrong here, it was a mixed review but you just give me very Gryffindor vibes.

I will next be sorting Hufflepuff, the house that holds the most of our class in my opinion, housing: Adriana, Abbie, Catherine, Sofia, Camila, Clara, Laura, and Izzy. I'll give everyone their very own line, starting with Izzy.

Izzy, one of your most striking features for me is your sense of justice and your diligence. You always want justice to be served and that can be seen in your work with Honor Council. As for diligence, I think that explains itself. You are one of the only people I know that can actually study for multiple hours even if you already know the material.

I'll use that as my jumping point for our next Hufflepuff, Clara. Clara, you also hold this quality of diligence but there is also something else that stick out for me: patience. You are always so patient when it comes to helping others and you stick out when it comes to that, even if it takes a while.

Adriana, I know we wanted you to be in Ravenclaw for aesthetic purposes but you truly are a Hufflepuff. You are such a hard worker and you have been one of the most loyal and steadfast people in my life since we met (which is not an easy task). You also have one of the lightest spirits I've ever met and never fail to make me feel better when, and it only makes sense for you to be in this house.

Laura, you are also a Hufflepuff. Your sarcastic personality might be something that throws people off, but that doesn't change the fact that you are a well rounded person. You also exhibit the trait of being an outsider, which is not bad at all don't take that the wrong way, that helps make you more relatable to more people since we all feel like that at some points.

Abbie, I also give the same reason for you but I wanted to add a little. You always make people feel so comfortable around you regardless of if you are close with them or not, a trait that I don't see much in people. I think it's something you should really be proud of.

Catherine, as Hunter said "If Catherine Ronquillo is not in Hufflepuff I will scream". You are such a caring and sweet person, it's impossible to put you anywhere else. You genuinely care about others and I wish I had that ability to always keep a smile on my face like you do.

Camila, I give you the same reasons as Catherine. You also give me Hufflepuff vibes, kind of like how Ms. King gives Gryffindor vibes. I keep trying to explain it but the words just aren't coming together. You are also a very kind and empathetic person, which also makes me put you in Hufflepuff.

Sofia, I know I keep saying that for a lot of people in this house, but you are one of the sweetest people in our school. You are always so nice and sweet, and you just have this vibe of general kindness to you that I find refreshing. Your kindness may come off as you just being shy and quiet, but I think we can all agree with what I said above.

Pt 2

Next up is Ravenclaw, housing Hunter, Erica, and Renee. Again, I'll give my reasons why that I've bounced around with my HP fans.

Hunter, it's so obvious that you're in Ravenclaw that I was able to guess it without any additional help. Deryn said you are the person that I should look to if I wanted to better understand the qualities of Ravenclaw. You are so witty that it hurts. You also have so much wisdom and a are always wanted to learn more just for the sake of learning.

Erica, you also have this quality of wanted to learn just to learn, like what you do with your fashion history lesson that genuinely interested me. But also, you have such a witty personality that always has me laughing. Your comebacks never fail. You also have the "perfectionist" trait that plays into your anxiety over school, which came up when I was doing my research on the house.

Renee, I know you probably won't agree with this, but hear me out. You should be in Ravenclaw. You love, and I mean love, learning about new topic and there is no ulterior motive behind this. I think that is my biggest argument as to why you'd be in Ravenclaw instead of Slytherin. You have a great sense of creativity that comes out in your art, another trait that came up in my research. I didn't place you in this house until I did way too much research over this weekend, but I think this is where you belong, although there might be a "hat stall"

This was actually really fun, and Hinter I will be stealing this with my fandom for my blog this week. Harry Potter has gotten too much attention so I will be bringing up the Percy Jackson cabins and explaining what godly parent means...

Thank you Rikki, for your thoughtfulness in placing me in a house! I think that I could probably fit into Ravenclaw pretty happily, but I think that another house would allow me to grow. I think that the hat places people in houses that allow them to reach their full potential, and I think that I don't need any help in my thirst fo knowledge.
I think we should do a Divergent faction section too because I would be interested in how everyone chooses, which is what makes the factions so interesting to me: everyone gets their own choice. I believe that it is an important point that in Harry Potter, an outside force makes the life changing choice for you, like fate, whereas in Divergent, you make your own decision.
Hunter, I think that your description of the houses are accurate, but I also think that the house you join is not your largest trait, but rather the one that you most want to develop.
