Unfinished Business

The other day in class, we were talking about how ghosts are often perceived as sticking around because they have unfinished business here on earth. For example, the ghost of Hamlet Sr. is still around because his son has not avenged him yet. This is also exemplified in Beloved through the ghost of the baby.

When we were talking about this in class, I got to thinking about a show that some of y'all may have heard of called Long Island Medium. Basically, this woman claims to be able to talk to ghosts, and in her episodes she speaks with the dead and helps those on earth communicate with their loved ones who have passed on.

Here's a link to one of the Medium's readings:

I don't know about y'all but I truly don't believe in the physical manifestation of spirits as ghosts. I agree that there exists a psychological effect of unfinished business in that people can realize that an issue hasn't been put to rest and so their minds respond to that knowledge. For example, let's say a friend and I have a fight and then my friend dies before we can make up. I might be "haunted" by my friend's ghost because of my own internal guilt, not some physical poltergeist causing mischief. My mind might attribute coincidences or everyday accidents as the works of a restless ghost because I feel guilty. I just truly don't believe that physical spirits exist in that sense.

Deb and I are huge Long Island Medium fans. We've seen Theresa live. Yeah. Anyways it's neat seeing how sometimes the messages she tells people are exactly the ones they need. I know it seems skeptical and totally fake, but it was cool seeing her do live readings here and make audience members really happy. One boy had lost his brother and she conveyed a message to him about it's okay to move on. Another girl got a reading from her dad telling her to not get a tattoo... That was kinda funny. Anyways whether you believe in it or not, it's comforting knowing someone is relieved and has been given a message they've apparently wanted.
