Controlling What We Can :)

We're calling this 'controlling what you can when ... quote image

This is a quote from Frozen II, and it was said by Olaf. I've noticed that many people I know are cutting, shaving, or dyeing their hair. Controlling your hair seems to be the go to for many people when their lives feel out of control. What are y'all doing to feel "in control?"

This is a really interesting point Andreas... didn't you also dye your hair... anyways something that I do to gain back some control is sew!! And I recommend everyone to try it. It's really fun and super rewarding. I think this is also why people clean during stressful times because it puts us back in control of our environment.

I just tend to through myself into my work. I find that by keeping busy and finding meaningful ways to be involved in my community are the best way to cope with situations like this

In order to take control I physically challenge myself. I either make myself run or bike a certain distance and it also helps take up the time. I also have out my beard and re arranged my room.

I’ve been re-listening to the Harry Potter books on audible. Jim Dale is keeping me sane (also he’s one of my favorite narrators, HE DOES THE VIOCES). I try to listen to at least 3 chapters a day and I’m already on Prisoner of Azkaban. I’ve also been drawing a lot, art is the best source of relief for me I find. I have to admit I’ve also been compulsively cleaning until every surface sparkles, at least my mom can’t complain about my room not being neat anymore.

In order to stay "in control", I am trying to maintain my old habits (e.g. waking up early on the weekdays, studying as much as I used to, and limiting the amount of time I spend on my phone). What that has left me with is a lot of free time, and during that free time, I have been working ahead on assignments and trying not to think too much about our current situation, as it could potentially bring unnecessary stress/sadness.

I used to be a terrible cook. The only meal I was good at making was grilled cheese or a BLT. And I can only eat so many of those. But because I've been forced into a situation where I have to make my meals every day, I've started to use this time to research recipes and practice cooking and baking. Focusing on this new hobby has made me feel more in control than ever. I've started making dinner for my family and seeing how much they enjoy it and that my persistence has paid off makes me feel like I'm in control. I love feeling productive and achieving the goals I set for myself. So starting and finishing a dish that turns out successfully delicious is one of the positive aspects of my life right now.
