Kola Nuts

This is slightly random, but I actually found a lot about the significance of kola nuts in Igbo culture. As we know from the novel, kola nuts were a popular snack for the Igbo. However, I learned that the nuts actually carried a symbolic meaning in society. The kola nut, or oji, is the first thing given to any visitor of an Igbo home. It represents a welcome and creates a sense of camaraderie. Moreover, prior to any important ceremony such as a wedding or major agreement, oji is traditionally served. I even learned that the oji's shell is broken into pieces, and if the shell breaks into three pieces, a celebration is to be planned for. I think it's fascinating to see the relationship between nature and Igbo tradition and the emphasis of the number "3" in Nigeria. Also, did you guys know that kola nuts are used in sodas and are one of the ingredients that contribute to the taste and caffeine levels of the drink? In fact, the word "cola" is derived from the kola nut.
