Fatal Attraction's Medea Story

The Hollywood blockbuster film , Fatal Attraction, starring Michael Douglas, tells the story of a disregarded mistress seeking revenge on the man who left her. Michael Douglas plays Dan Gallhenger a married lawyer, living in New York, who cheats on his wife with a book editor named Alex Forest. The movies plot is based on how Alex Forest stalks and threatens Dan Gallhenger after ending their fling; Forest pushes her self back into Gallhenger's life by playing games with him and his family. The character Alex Forest is tricky, finding subtle ways to break down Gallhenger, through sending messages to both him and his wife; at one point, Forest even kidnaps Gallhenger's son, but only to take him to coney island so she can play with Dan's head. The Film ends with Alex Forest being the one who breaks down; because Ghalleger held his ground throughout the film, Forest is left with no other choice but to murder Dan with her own hands. Forest is killed in her failed attempt at murder. The Story of Fatal Attraction is a sort of a reversed Medea. Alex Forest is clever just like Medea. Forest is clever in a dark and manipulating way. Along with Alex's cleverness, the plot of the film is nearly a copy and paste of Medea. We have a betrayal: Gallhenger leaving Forest to return to his normal life, we have the clever female character: Alex Forest, but what we don't have is the success of the revenge. the 1987 film Fatal Attraction has a similar plot to that of Euripides' Medea.

I remember watching this! Wow. Interesting connection you made. And like Medea, Alex has nobody in her corner either. I do think Medea, despite her despicable actions (Alex kidnapped Dan's son but um, Medea's a killer so...), inspires more pity than Alex Forest since there were no sacred vows broken between her and Dan which of course contributes to your dubbing the movie "reversed Medea." Also, the movie takes place in modern day, where women are considered actual people ((: I think Alex had more options to start over in part because of this. But that's just my opinion.
