Fidget Spinners

As I sit here on a Saturday night endlessly spinning my fidget spinner, I cannot help but think of the cyclical nature of time Marquez presents in 100 Years of Solitude. A fidget spinner goes round and round until you decided to stop it.(picture of fidget spinner for reference) You can keep it going for as long as you may want, but to keep it going for a long time it requires some attention. In 100 Years of Solitude, it seems that Macondo is an seemingly endless cycle at some points. The gypsies returning every year, eventually the gypsies stop coming and the railroads come in, repeating this cycle of a new invention coming to the town every year. The recurrences of many similar names is another detail hinting at the cyclical nature of Macondo. Incest seems to also be a topic that comes up time and time again throughout the novel. Like a fidget spinner though, Macondo cannot continue this cycle without an extra push every now and then. For fidget spinners this push is the flick of a finger every now and then, but for Macondo it is the persistence and up-keeping of Ursula that allows Macondo to keep spinning for so long. But just as you can only spin for so long, Ursula can only take care of Macondo for so long before dying. Just as Elizabeth noted in her earlier post, the death of Ursula marked the downfall for Macondo. Just as a fidget spinner will eventually stop spinning without getting a flick every now and then, Macondo eventually died without the caring of Ursula.
