ART CLASS

"At any rate a certain awkwardness can be observed each time he approaches the achievement of similar goals. He loves the process, but he's not so fond of the achievement, and that, of course is terribly amusing."

This quote from Notes from Underground basically describes how I feel about all of my art projects. I enjoy making them, but then I always hate how my pieces turn out.

Haha yeah I basically feel the same way. Only, about 3/4 the way through a project I'm usually ready to kick it out the window... Not that I don't love making weird lamps and stuff but usually by the end I'm just ready to be done. Making the thing is the best part for sure.

Yes, I totally agreed with this statement when I read it. I feel that way with a lot of things and think that its going to be awesome, but it ends up sucking.

Another part of the Underground Man's philosophy that is extremely interesting, is that he is similar to other people and wants to get revenge on for whenever he was wronged (the dinner comes to mind), but he does not have the guts. He is conscious of his problems, but he does not do anything about it. His inertia also ties into this.

Yes, you're totally right about his obsession with revenge. When you mentioned it, I thought about the incident with the officer in which he spends an enormously long amount of time preparing to bump into him so he doesn't have to step aside and can feel equal. The Underground Man is extremely obsessive and spends way too much time thinking about how others will perceive him when in reality no one else really cares. When he finally does bump shoulders with the officer, the officer simply keeps walking and doesn't really care about the Underground Man even after he spent so much time preparing for that one moment.

He thinks about things a lot but he has been underground for 40 years. And when he was out in the world he was a recluse. So, imagine a guy just going home, not watching tv and just getting all riled up over the littlest things that happen in your day.

When I read the this quote I was like woah this guy is totally right. I feel like art is something that is never finished, at least that is the way my art projects always were. I guess it is hard to reach your idea of perfection. This kind of reminded me of the "perfect form" from the allegory of the cave. People are always striving to reach perfection but they never can.

I agree with that statement about art pieces. I used to have fun in ceramics class making my pieces but they never turned out like I envisioned them. The underground man tries to seem so different from everyone else but in reality, he shares many of the same qualities that we have, such as being self concious. Many of us share that same feeling.

haha Shaina this literally describes my artistic process too. I enjoy the process but am rarely content with the finished project. As Aly said, its hard to reach your vision of perfection. And what may be perfect in your eyes, can be far from perfect in someone else's. Underground Man thinks wayyy too much, which in my opinion is his downfall. In art, over thinking can completely ruin your envisioned piece -- I'm the prime example of this.
