The post title isn't to be mean. It's literally the meaning of "idiot." As we all hopefully know, a large portion of the English language is rooted in Latin and Ancient Greek. The word "idiot" is no exception.
In his "Funeral Oration," Pericles said (approximately), "We alone consider a man who plays no part in [politics] not as one who minds his own business but as useless."
The word "idiot" as we know it has its origins in the Ancient Greek word "idiotes" meaning "private person" (someone who does not partake in public affairs).
Rather interesting to think about how the meanings of words change over time and especially, in that context, whence they come.
