Ancient Theaters Still Being Used Today

While researching for my our presentation in class about the Theater of Epidaurus I stumbled upon something rather interesting. Every year, there is a festival held in the ancient theater. To me it was really crazy that theaters built over 2000 years ago could still be used to this day for events with little to no change. The festival is creatively named “Athens and Epidaurus Festival 2017.” The festival takes place both at the theater in Epidaurus and the theater in Athens. In fact the festival is still going on right now. It is actually taking place throughout August and September throughout a variety of ancient theaters. During the festival days, performances of popular plays such as Sweeney Todd along with a variety of other performances by orchestras and musicians take place.

It amazes me how theses structures are still well capable of holding large scale events almost 2000 years after they were built. The average life span of a building is 120 years, these theaters although they might not be perfectly preserved have gone well beyond their life expectancy. This to me just speaks to how well and how much effort went into building these theaters. Maybe one of you will be at one of these performances one day!
