Dreams

I like this quote from Márquez and I think it relates to the story of Macondo and its inhabitants. José Arcadio Buendía is a dreamer; he is fascinated by the inventions of the gypsies and dreams of using a giant magnifying glass to burn enemies in wars. He explores the outskirts of Macondo in the hopes of finding a way to the outside world. Colonel Aureliano Buendía dreams of conquering the country and starts 32 civil war campaigns. One of the Buendías dreams of connecting Macondo to the outside world and brings in the yellow train. However, generation after generation, the people of Macondo cease to dream and become more materialistic (like Aureliano Segundo). As a result, there is a feeling that later generations grow old faster and die faster than earlier generations. Also, the town as a whole seems to deteriorate faster as its residents stop dreaming.
