The Lion king

So everyone know how the Lion King is based off of Hamlet, but I wanted to know why they decided do base it off of Hamlet. This is what I found according to wiki: The Lion King was the first Disney animated feature to be an original story, rather than be based on an already existing work. The filmmakers have said that the story of The Lion King was inspired by the lives of Joseph and Moses, from the Bible, and William Shakespeare's Hamlet. This was just a little interesting thing.

After reading Andreas' post I became interested in the parallels between The Lion King and Hamlet. So, I started to research similarities and differences between the two. I found a prezi someone made that is really well done and gives a good overall view of two works. (I will leave the link down below, but I will tell y'all some of my favorite/most interesting points from the prezi.) The overall topics it talks about are the similarities and differences between the characters in the movie and in the play, and then the similarities and differences between the storylines of both the movie and the play. So, for the main characters, Simba and Prince Hamlet, they are said to be similar because they are both princes and both the protagonists in the stories. But these characters are also said to be different because Simba does not act crazy like Prince Hamlet does in the play. Also, the "father" characters, Mufasa and King Hamlet are similar because they are both fathers and both die at the hands of their brother. They are said to be different because Mufasa does not want revenge in the movie, but in the play King Hamlet does. For the storylines, the similarities between the two are pretty basic in plot and the differences are a little more specific. One of the biggest differences the prezi points out is that Prince Hamlet sees his father's ghost at the beginning and at the end of the play, but in the movie Simba only sees his father's ghost near the end.

This is a really interesting post for me, as I had not made the connection yet that The Lion King and Hamlet were related. One thing that I do want to note is that in The Lion King, Simba, the son of the late King Mufasa, is told, as a child, to leave the kingdom by Scar, Mufasa's brother and killer. When Simba returns to the kingdom as a young adult, he learns that Scar killed his father by pushing him off a cliff. Simba then gets into a fight with Scar and ends up pushing him off the same cliff, resulting in Scar's death. What I'm curious about is how our play's ending will relate to the ending of The Lion King. Will young Hamlet kill Claudius with poison as Claudius killed his father, or will young Hamlet find another way to kill him? Or will young Hamlet be unsuccessful and not be able to kill Claudius at all?
