Beloved

I am definitely going to use Beloved as one of the pieces to prepare for the AP exam. Beloved by Toni Morrison is full of essential details regarding slavery that are not normally discussed. It brings a new perspective to the situation especially to different cultures. The character Beloved is an extreme representation of the past continuing to come up regardless of how long ago it occurred. This is important because it shows how the concept of slavery will never just go away. It impacted so many lives and like Beloved, it will come back from the "dead".

And in the case of the example we got, Beloved is a great one to write about the significance of names. Since Beloved isn't her real name, there are many different ways to take the argument. You can take her name literally and talk about how much her family adored her, or you could talk about the significance that her name was taken from her gravestone instead of her real name, so is she more the daughter of Sethe or the ghost of the past.

I thought of the tree motif and animal imagery in the book, but they would be too narrow to be topics for a complete essay. But I think that the fact that Beloved presents a side of history that Morrison sees as underexposed would be an interesting topic.

There is so much you could write about beloved. Especially because beloved is fresh in our minds from recently writing papers on it and having tests! The level of intricacy in the novel in various themes - such as motherhood, community, time, and others - are all great topics for the AP Exam. As ms. Quinet recently said....its been real. I love y'all so much and wish you the best of luck in college.

I will also focus on beloved for my AP exam. I think I'm going to focus on time for my essay. I will talk about the past and how it effects sethe and her views of the future. I will also focus on how beloved has flash backs of her time on the middle passage. I also want to incorporate Paul D and his experiences from the past. Any thoughts on how I should add this to my time theme? Maybe something about the past and how it scarred him for life. I don't know, can y'all help?
