Back to Podcasts...

So I know we have been focusing on Oedipus Rex, but I want to throw it back to podcasts again for a little bit. I was really interested in them after doing our crime podcast project that I wanted to look more into them, and of course I wanted to share my research with y'all! I kind of thought that podcasts were "replacing" radio and and that podcasts were "the new big thing," which I found to be pretty accurate after doing my research. This The Atlantic article states, "Among the technological innovations of the last decade, there's a discrete yet enduring format that may fulfill such an alternative, 'sensational' vision of the role of media in democracy: podcasts." Podcasts are said to be different with the fact that they are supposed to make you "trigger" your emotions and feel things. There are also certain podcasts that interest people because they talk about the hottest tv shows. Instead of listening to music or talk shows on the radio, people listen to other people "gossip" about their favorite tv shows. Podcasters are also seen as being more of a storyteller and when you are listening it's like you are in the same room as them having a conversation. Whereas some radio talkers are just journalists reporting facts and playing music. Also, different from radio, podcasts can reach audiences all over the world. Radio stations, on the other hand, are usually just associated with a city or a certain area. These are just some of the many reasons why people are switching from radio to podcasts, and I might be one of them........

I think one of the other big contributors of the growth of podcasts is the versatility of the platform. There probably a podcast out there for everybody. The freedom of creation allows for the vastly different types of podcasts out there. The next reason that I could think of is the accessibility. We are in the age of the cell phone. Everybody knows that. People don't listen to radio anymore in the car. They plug their phone in and play something from there. Podcasts can be listened to in the car, while working out, in bed, and many other places because the average adult nowadays has a cell phone. So, in my opinion the versatility and accessibility of podcasts are the main reasons of their popularity.

I agree with you that podcasts are very intriguing, and I think that my opinion is shared by many others as well. This is because of the sheer nature of podcasts. Podcasts are a medium of entertainment that is brought to us through the form of audio. They can provide insightful knowledge to us or recount fictional stories that incite our curiosity, just like a tv show or movie could. However, as they do so without providing any visual aspect, they require the listener to pay close attention to detail and formulate imagery in their head, just as they would if they were hearing a story being narrated to them. Also, they make the listener feel as though they were in a conversation with the speakers, and overall listeners feel more connected with the content of the podcast. Moreso, according to a study by Stanford University, information and statistics mentioned in storytelling rather than visually increase retention rates by 60%, thus showing how active involvement in podcasts brings the added benefit of comprehension of the topic. Finally, podcasts allow the listener to multitask. One can drive, eat, or even sleep with a podcast playing in the background, and podcasts can bring life to the many monotonous and boring tasks of our day.
