Incest

I savannahs post on incest is very interesting. This was explored a lot in the book. This makes no sense because Marquez wants Latin America to be independent and not have any European influence, but he explores incest in the book with European people. This to me is very contradictory.

I think the use of incest in the novel is a major plot point. Yes, incest can be associated with being barbaric and seemingly shows the Latin American people in a lesser light. However, by saying that Europeans also commit incest that is like saying the European people are no better than the Latin American people. This act of incest puts them on an equal playing field where they can't judge each other for this seemingly strange action. The use of incest, in a sense, equates the European and Latin American people.
