~Art~

I liked the art for this unit. It was fairly recent and I recognized a lot of the pieces I saw. I really enjoyed Persistence of Memory by Dali. I see that painting everywhere. It's very interesting. It's kind of dream like. It has some optical illusions too. I also like Pop art, which is still relevant today.

Modern art is very different than most forms of art pieces of the past. Instead of trying to accurately depict reality, modern art focuses on the reactions and feelings that particular art pieces invoke. It also includes more satirical aspects of society such as Duane Hanson's Supermarket Shopper, which depicts an average shopper that has her basket full of junk food and boxed items. Also, she does not seem to care what others think of her because she has her hair in rollers. She symbolizes excessive compulsion and is made in somewhat of a satirical accuracy.

I found this unit very interesting. Post-Modern Art stands out as a stark difference than any of the art in units before. I think this was a result of the emergence of new technologies. Some of the works of art included blowing up images from pop culture and advertisements. It was more of a direct representation of culture at the time, as it emphasized consumerism. Artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein pretty much reimaged advertisements and pictures from comic strips and published it as art. Their styles were heavily ctritiqued, but this worked in their favor as their art was to show how consumerism controlled the culture.

Post-modern art was a lot of reactionary pieces that were used to critique the more oppressive war-time conditions. Post-modern artists were more creative and abstract because it was a freer, looser time period where people felt accepted to express themselves no matter how conservative or how liberal their ideas were.

I find modern art somewhat frustrating. I understand that now artists are not confined by certain rules and ways of doing things, but most of the time because of this, the works focus on the way that they make the viewer feel. At the very least, in the case of many of the paintings, they did not make me feel anything. They just made me wonder how these random blobs on a canvas can be considered art.
