Dada is poopoo

I don't like Dadaism. Its very strange. For example, Duchamp's Fountain is just a urinal. That is not art. That is a urinal. It is a thing in which men urinate into. There is nothing pretty about it; its just a porcelain toilet with "R. Mutt 1917" written on it. Even though there is a water spout, its not a fountain. "Water" goes into a urinal, not out. Why would anyone want to display that or look at it? I'm glad it got denied from the Society of Independent Artists.

I think Duchamp was not trying to make art in his piece "The Fountain" but trying to challenge the idea of what art is, and how it is valued. Dada was a movement motivated by anti-rationalism and challenging orthodox ideas, surrounded by nonsense. By simply putting out a urinal as a piece of art, critics would be confused and probably a bit outraged. Duchamp created "The Fountain" to intentionally shock the public. This sort of random, questionable art is a metaphor for Duchamp saying that what civilization values is pointless if he can make art with just a urinal.

I agree with Dylan. This avant-garde movement was meant to challenge and shock people out of their typical artistic viewpoints. I believe Dadaism was meant to make people question what art really meant and the different ways people express art in everyday life. I find it quite interesting how much Dada opposed rationality and conformity, signifying their want for change and lack of complacency.

I think he succeeded in making his audience question what art truly is. But did he use art to make his audience question this? I would say no. A urinal is not art. All he did was tell people it was art. Of course people would question the validity of art when they are told that something that is obviously not art is art.

I think this was honestly the point. Maybe he was saying that anything can be art or that nothing at all is art. His piece can be looked at as him saying that artists do random stuff and call it art.
