I Can Do Bad All By Myself

Medea and Madea: What do they have in common? I mean it. Regardless of whatever impression he gives in his movies, Tyler Perry is a smart man from New Orleans baby! WOO! NOLA REPRESENT! There must be a reason that he chose the name Madea. Discuss.

Dearest Tanner,
While I initially regarded this post as some of the most inane drivel I have ever seen posted, with one or two searches I actually found something quite interesting. Madea's Wikipedia page describes her as "Vindictive in nature, Madea gets even in a bad crazy way" (Wikipedia). This is very similar to Medea in the sense that they are both very vengeful people. Evidence for this can be found in a converstion between Madea and Dr. Phil in which she said, "Well when you gettin' got and somebody done got you and you go get them, when you get 'em, everybody's gon' get got" (Madea Goes to Jail). While I personally think that it is unlikely that the name similarity is anything more than a coincidence, there are strong similarities between the characters. All in all, I congratulate you, Tanner, even a stopped clock is right at least twice a day.
Sincerely,
Brandon Clementine Stokes

Brandon Thomas Stokes, it is also interesting to note that Madea's wikipedia page states that she has a tendency to overreact and has even landed herself in anger management classes, courts, and prison as a result of this. At the end of the day, though, she is described as someone who is always trying to what's right by getting justice for others or herself. She often helps people get revenge on those who have wronged them, but most of the time these methods involve weapons or physical violence of some sort. It is most important to note that her page says she will even "thug out" on CHILDREN and TEENS. These are all very similar qualities to Euripides' Madea, and I'd even go as far as to say that Mr. Perry DID choose her name based on the play.

Dearest Jacob,
While I agree with a majority of your analysis, your statement that Tyler Perry chose the name Madea based off of Medea is simply a leap with very little evidence backing it up. I did some further digging and found an article from the New York Times which stated that, "Madea is a corruption of Ma'dear, a term of endearment for a mother or grandmother within some African-American circles" (Cole). All in all, your assertion was both uninformed and incorrect. I bid you good day, sir.
Sincerely,
Brandon Clementine Stokes

P.S: Brandon Thomas Stokes is dead, long live Brandon Clementine Stokes!

Dearest ,
I'd like to further Brandon's analysis, by continuing the quotation he provided. In the cult classic "Madea Goes to Jail," Dr. Phil acts as the Chorus in saying "Dr. Phil: Yea but you're gettin' the gotters when they didn't do anything to even get you.
Madea: Yea but if the gotters get me I'm gonna get my glock."
This has some similarities to when Medea reveals her nefarious plan to the Chorus, to which the Chorus replies by imploring her not to follow through: "Since you have shared the knowledge of your plan with us, I both wish to help you and support the normal ways of mankind, and tell you not to do this thing."
Medea, replies in a similarly stubborn fashion to Madea: "I can do no other thing. It is understandable for you to speak thus. You have not suffered as I have."
Additionally, I'd like to present a video clip as another example of Madea, similar to Medea, taking drastic and malevolent measures to get revenge on those who wrong her. Let this serve as a reminder; never cross Medea/Madea, for "Hell Hath No Fury Like a Woman Scorned." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OXfGR4dgiY

I don’t know why it spaced out all the words in the first row. I now appear as a utter blithering blubbering fool before the masses.
