Igbo Culture in Photos

We've discussed many different aspects of Igbo culture while reading Things Fall Apart, but I thought it would be interesting to see what they look like in real life.

The New Yam Festival

  • Takes place in August-October
  • Begins by breaking kola nuts, then the yams are consumed with palm oil
  • Delicacies: Boiled white yam with a red oily sauce and yam porridge

I enjoy these photos because it indicates that the book has taught us a lot about Igbo culture. I would like to provide extra information about the New Yam Festival to expand our knowledge. The festival thanks the gods for a good harvest in addition to providing an opportunity for different tribes to gather and socialize. It begins with a public ceremonial roasting of the yams by the most prominent members of the community. The yams are first offered to "Ohajoku" who is known as the god of harvest, then the rest are consumed with the shared knowledge that the gods are satisfied. Today, the festival provides an opportunity to call home for those that grew up in Igboland but moved elsewhere. Source: https://zodml.org/discover-nigeria/heritage-and-culture/new-yam-festival.
