Design Your Own Creation...

"Do you design your own creation?"

Well, if this question is approached from the perspective that God ultimately is man's creator and is ultimately in control of whether or not certain people will find us, then no, one is unable to design his own creation--creation in this sense would mean one's life pathway. However, I see an inherent flaw in this view of God's involvement with man with the belief of free will. If God gives man free will, then he has burdened humanity with the responsibility of finding Him. Though God may aid humanity in doing so, he cannot ultimately have power over whether or not humanity does. If he does, then free will no longer exists. And as a result, humanity is unable to design its own course of life, its creation.

I believe this question is asking something along the lines of can humans control who they become? Like Steven has suggested, there are two controversial view points on this topic. These sides seem to revolve around the Calvinistic debate about free will. If you believe that humans have free will, then you would most likely answer "yes, humans can design their own creation." On the other hand, if you believe in predestination, then you would probably reply with "no". This shows that you believe that God has ultimate control over humans.

I think that one must consider the possibility that free will is an illusion specific to the human realm. If God is truly omniscient, then he must know how the course of a human's life will result. However, humans obviously lack this foresight. Therefore, God gives humans options, though he knows full-well which choices each human will make. From a human point of view, however, people are still making decisions. As a result, the course of one's is technically human-designed... despite the fact that God already knows the final design.

I think this question can be determined multiple ways. Since we were little, we have been taught that God is the creater of all things. Therefore, God has designed each of our lives. If this is really so, then no one one earth designs their own creation. I think the answer to the question depends on personal preference and your understanding of God and free will.

I agree with you, Katherine. If I lived my life believing that I had no free will, I would feel trapped and tied down by my fate. I choose to believe that God has given us free will and cannot control how we act, which is why no one is perfect. However, this is just my personal view and there is no "right" answer.

Whether or not humans have free will has long been a contentious debate. I have never understood why it has been either free will or predestination. God could easily have created everything, and just stepped back to let it work. Just because God created,it does not mean that he still creates. As we know from science, there is conservation of both mass and energy, which means that nothing is ultimately created or destroyed. I certainly do not pretend to have the answer though.
