Theosophy

I find Theosophy fascinating. They believe all world religions originated from one called Ancient Wisdom. Their symbol combines all types of familiar modern day religious symbols. They are accepting of people from all backgrounds and beliefs. They believe each religion has elements of Ancient Wisdom but have been manipulated. Theosophy aims to find God by finding the truth. They have schools and camps dedicated to learning the truth.

I really enjoyed learning about theosophy. I also find it interesting that it is still prevalent today. In Savannah's presentation, I noticed how she discussed this belief system to be very accepting and tolerant of other religions. I think the concept of truth is very significant and interesting. It seems as those all other religions under Ancient Wisdom are accepted and practiced, as long as they believe in this ultimate truth. This belief seems less condemning and discriminatory and why I found it extremely impactful during our class discussions yesterday.

I agree with Brooke. It is a very impactful religion. However, in my research, I did not mention an interesting side of theosophy. They are a paid-member organization, like a country club. You pay by year or buy a lifetime membership. If you buy the lifetime membership, you are allowed ONE reincarnation for the small price of $1500.

The idea of being able to pay for reincarnations almost reminds me of the selling of indulgences in Catholicism. Although Catholics are not nearly as accepting as theologists, they did sell a sort of "get out of jail free" card for sin. You would pay a certain amount, and then you would be forgiven for your sins. These indulgences were not cheap. Although the prices were decided by the sin, they could become very expensive. Marrying your first cousin could cost you (adjusted for inflation and currency exchange) $5000. Theologists Instead, sell "get out of jail free" cards for death.

I think theosophy is a very interesting idea. I can definitely see where they are coming from. As we saw with Osiris and Jesus, many characters in different religious tales are very similar, so it makes sense that they could all share a common background.
