Seeing, Hearing, Helping; Ghosts?

In the novel we see each generation of characters are increasingly able to interact with ghosts.  My question is: if any, what is the significance of the specific abilities as they pertain to each character?  Leonie can see and hear but can't really help.  Jojo can see, hear, and tries to help.  Kayla can see, hear, and we see in the end does help.  So what's up?

I think just as Leonie recognizes issues within her family (I.e. she understands she’s a bad mother and a negative influence on her children,) she never does anything to change her situation. Jojo, in the story, acts as Kayla’s paternal and almost maternal figure. He is always trying to help, but it seems that ultimately his future will not be much better than that of his parents, since he has no chances of escaping Bois Sauvage (this is reflected in the way that he can’t help the ghosts.) I think Kaylas ability to help may be Ward hunting at the fact that Kayla is the one to turn the family around in future generations. She may grow up and finally escape Bois Sauvage and the past, and ultimately help the next generations, just as she helps the ghosts.
