Confused about Beloved

So I am believe that Beloved is definitely the reincarnation/embodiment of the Baby Ghost. Her description makes her seem like a baby, which makes sense because she didn't have time to grow up. However, if she's been dead all these years and hasn't experience anything, how does she know what sex is? And why does she feel the need to steal her mom's man to get it? Why does Paul D feel its ok to sleep with his lover's "dead" child?

I don't think that you can read Beloved's character that literally. She is not an actual baby. She is possibly the reincarnated spirit of the baby, but it is not like Paul D slept with a child. Also, Paul D didn't necessarily want to sleep with her. Her power was so strong that it almost forced him to do it. I think the point of that scene was to show her power and possible supernatural abilities.

While Beloved's character is strange, I agree that we can't take her literally. Beloved literally describes being dead and being curled up like a baby and even has some mannerisms of a child, but she is most definitely not a child. I still don't know why she wants Sethe's boyfriend or whatever he is because she seems to admire Sethe so I don't know why she would hurt her that way. I believe Beloved's character has layers and we must analyze more than just the surface. I feel like something evil is following Beloved and I'm still trying to figure her out myself.

Further, beloved is inconsistent as a character. At first, she liked Denver and even allowed Denver to be motherly towards her. Now, she has become evil towards her. I believe that if it is true that beloved is the reincarnation of baby beloved, that would explain why she is so messed up. After all, we learn that Sethe was in jail briefly and that baby beloved was killed violently. We can therefore assume that sethe killed her baby.

I think it is ultimately up to the reader to decide what beloved is. Regardless of who she really is though, she is still really important. Through her other characters are developed. For example, she shows Denver's loneliness. More than anything she exists to try to further develop the other characters.
