La pieta

This is Michelangelo's La pieta. It depicts Jesus lying in Mary's lap after his crucification. The discussion about pietas from class today. I assume la pieta come from the same root but I'm not sure. The depiction here is that Jesus had to suffer and do his duty for the good of the world and God's will.  It seems to me like there are a lot of parallels between Jesus's pieta and Aeneas's pietas.
