This is the article I read in class. I think it's pretty cool to hear the account from someone close to the event. Although he technically did not witness the event I still think it's worth the time to read.

I think it says a lot about the effects of slavery that a mother would kill her child. I can't imagine my mom ever wanting to hurt me, even if it was for a good cause.
I agree with Parker. I think Morrison uses this story to specifically show the horrors of slavery. Many people believe that "there is nothing stronger than a mothers love" and that a nmother would do anything for her children even sacrifice herself so they could live. It is really saying something when a mother is willing to break this bond and kill her children. I think this scene really shows how terrible slavery was.
The effects of slavery were no doubt powerful for everyone. Not only for the black slaves, but even for the whites (as Stamp Paid points out). I think the murder of her baby, Mary, was justified for Garner, but I don't think I would have the guts to murder a child. She was very brave and courageous in her actions and I support her 100%.
