i prefer hellenic sculpture because i appreciate the facial restraint and the idealized and naturalistic depictions. i prefer seeing paintings portraying emotion and showing context over hellenistic sculpture.
I have nothing exciting to say. I'm pretty much in agreement with everyone else in that I prefer Hellenistic art. I must admit I am quite fond of the seated boxer. Something about the way he is hunched over suggests a certain fatigue. Of course the emotion in the Laocoon Group is a real wowzer.
I like hellenistic art better because it shows more emotion and has more of a story behind the scultures, which I think is the epitome of art. Hellenistic art also shows some of the more unconvential aspects of life, and subjects that are tabboo make art intriguing.
I made a blink decision with my preference--I just looked at the Laocoon group and felt pathos for the dying Gauls and I thought, "Oh, Hellenistic!"
But over the weekend, without internet, I began to reflect on Hellnistic culture. I read Chapter 3 of the textbook and I couldn't help but feel a bit, well, jaded. Almost as if I'd watch this peak of Greek culture and then this steady decline, this bastardization. I use strong terms-- I myself am Hellenistic, emotional, exaggerated, melodramatic-- but the awe, the reverence that had overcome me when reading about Hellenic society faded slowly into something almost akin to revulsion.
Hellenism is beautiful in its pathos, but "educated" (better read, at least) as I am now about the two cultures, I cannot help but admire the meticulousness of Hellenic temples, the awe they inspire, the stately grace of Athena Lemnia. Hellenism stands face to face with me, at my level, and mimics my own emotions, dragging them to further extremes and me with it. I enjoy it; I can revel in it. But Hellenic art urges me to a higher plane, or at least makes me aware of something much greater and much more graceful than myself. It is so calm, and so austere, and now that I think I can understand it more by comparison, so beautiful.
I like the hellenic sculptures better because they emit a sense of serenity and peace. The average Greeks would probably look at the sculptures and find something to strive for and in doing so they would improve themselves somewhat even if they could not reach that perfect form. Every Greek could have a similar role model and try to ameliorate together. In the society, there would be unity and group growth. The hellenistic art is more interesting and more "arty" becasue of what we assume art to be today. That idea of showing emotion in a piece has become common today, and though it is enjoyable,the Hellenic had a better purpose.
I agree with Andrew, Michelle, and Mrs. Scandurro. And I promise I was thinking this before I got to their posts too lol. I was trying to make this point in the earlier post, but I didn't quite get it out. Our times value individualism and extremes. I prefer the Hellenistic art, but I can still appreciate the Hellenic sculptures for their constancy and sense of serenity.
For me, Hellenic art evokes a feeling of calm while Hellenistic art stirs up many different emotions. Hellenic art is elegant and beautiful, but like everyone said, it doesn't reflect reality, and most of us value the realistic. Hellenic art strove toward perfection in form and balance. Hellenistic art strove to replicate reality as close as possible. I don't think we could achieve either. Perfection is an ideal, and an ideal is just that, an ideal. But both art forms are honorable in that they at least tried their best, and that's all we can ever really do.
