I am impressed with the artistic diversity that spawned from Florence during the Renaissance. Paintings range from excessively ornate, like the
Journey of the Magi, to the dark colors and
sfumato style of Leonardo da Vinci's
Madonna on the Rocks. In sculpture, pieces ranged from the intensely dramatic and realistic (Pollaiuolo's
Hercules and Antaeus comes to mind) to the lyric and metaphorical (like Donatello's
David). The opportunity to explore a myriad of artistic styles inspired da Vinci, to become a Jack of all trades... and a master of
all. It is no wonder that the term
Renaissance Man people, like da Vinci, who were well versed in all popular media of artistic expression.
