I also noticed similarities between "The Apology of Socrates" and "The Bhagavad-Gita.” The most significant example is the use of dialogue in both works. In "The Apology," Plato at times employs dialogue, the Socratic Method to be more specific, as a tool for Socrates to bolster his defense. Likewise, the basis of the "Bhagavad Gita" is the dialogue between Krishna and Arjuna as the avatar of Vishnu attempts to justify to the warrior his sacred duty.
I agree, Samantha. Through dialogue, these works can be related to a much broader group of people. More people can understand their messages in their relaxed, conversational tones. The Bhagavad- Gita is obviously still an influential text to people in our times (Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Thoreau) as well as The Apology and other Greek philosophical works set the stage for Western thought that is still being used as a foundation for ideas today.
ReplyDeleteDespite the extremely different cultures and backgrounds of the two works, it's interesting that "The Apology of Socrates" and "the Bhagavad-Gita" are so similar in dialogue. I think that the dialogue and character interaction reflects the inquisitive nature of man and simply wanting to understand his surroundings. Plato and Aristotle both emphasized the use of "logos" to bring good to other people; similarly, the dialogue in the Bhagavad-Gita demonstrated human relations, and was similar in its construction to many classic texts.
