It was called Snitch and it was about a girl that goes to a school that is completely submerged in gang activity. She does not belong to any of these gangs until a boy comes along. They start dating and he joins the Crips, so she decides to join the gang as well. I should add that this is no easy task. She had to sleep with the leader of the gang who, according to the book's description, was funky and abusive. In an extreme turn of events, it turns out that this boy only joined the Crips to infiltrate the gang and avenge his brother's death (his brother was a Blood and the Crips killed him). Therefore, the girl is basically stuck in this gang that she had no true ties to except her boyfriend who is long gone at this point. In order to get out she must get brutally beaten by all of the girls in the gang. Comparing this to the Guelphs and Ghibillenes is really helpful. It makes me think in depth about the intensity of these feuds and how much it affected the overall culture and even outside bystanders. I compare it to the description of how much the school and outsiders at the school in this book were affected. This girl would have never joined the gang but because a boy came in the picture (who had this plan from the start), she was dragged into the mess. If this interests you, I suggest reading this article! https://web.stanford.edu/class/e297c/poverty_prejudice/gangcolor/lacrips.htm It explains the origins of the gangs and when and where they fight. Your bringing this topic up reminded me of the devils attacking each other in our most recent circle of hell, as well as the wraths attacking each other. I truly just don't understand the purpose of people nowadays continuing to join a gang that exists solely to harm other people - people that you don't even know personally and have probably never harmed you individually! The bloods and the crips are definitely very thought provoking and crazy.
